Allentsteig is a town with 1964 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district Zwettl in Lower Austria. The city is known by the same named Truppenübungsplatz Allentsteig.

Geography

Allentsteig located in the Waldviertel in Lower Austria. The area of ​​the municipality covers 71.41 square kilometers; 35.04 % of the area is forested.

Location

Allentsteig is in the middle of the Waldviertel.

It lies at an elevation of 550 m and approximately 15 kilometers (direct distance) north-east of the district capital Zwettl, some 60 km (air line) north of the regional capital St. Pölten and 95 km ( straight line ) northwest of the capital, Vienna.

History

The first witnesses there from the Middle Ages, as were settled the Great Franks under Charlemagne. The area around Allentsteig was paid by the Babenbergs to the Kuenringer. So here a castle was built around 1430 and the castle. The name came from the Illyrian Dujay ( for " rushing " ) and transformed over time through Tygia, Tigin and Thige to Stige. In 1212 the place was called Adeloldstige. In 1700, he was already Allentsteig.

In Allentsteig is also the origin of Hitler's ancestors. In order to keep its roots secret, was relocated a part of the village after the Anschluss and created a military training area.

Military cemetery
