Alliance (Chile)

The Alianza por Chile is a rightist party alliance in Chile. Then there are the slightly larger center-left Concertación grouping and not represented in parliament left coalition Juntos Podemos. The binomial electoral system Chiles favors the formation of two large blocks and favors the second strongest alliance, ie the Alianza.

It consists of the two parties

  • Unión Demócrata Independiente (UDI )
  • Renovación Nacional ( RN )

The Alianza por Chile has to date under five names to be elections.

  • Democracia y Progreso (1989-1992)
  • Participación y Progreso (1992-1993)
  • Unión por el Progreso (1993-1996)
  • Unión por Chile (1996-2000)

In the elections in December 2005, the two parties had for the first ballot, each with its own candidates for the second round of elections on January 15, 2006 support both parties with Sebastián Piñera the candidate of the Renovación Nacional after Joaquín Lavín of the Unión Demócrata Independiente only the third place of the four candidates had achieved. In the concurrent legislative elections, the Alliance joined with a common list.
