Alliance for Progress

The Alliance for Progress ( Alliance for Progress ) was an agreement on economic cooperation between North and South America, which was initiated in 1961 by then U.S. President John F. Kennedy. The aim of the agreement was to prevent cooperation of other countries of Latin and South America with the Soviet Union against the backdrop of the Cuban Revolution.

Objectives and results

The U.S. committed itself to in this Agreement to major investments in the economy and the education of the countries of Latin and South America. Most countries were in favor, although quite open, but refused to accept a ground Agreement. Furthermore failed the Agreement on the Kennedy's death and the fact that his successors showed little interest in the Agreement.

In the early 1970s, the alliance was considered an error and reinstated under President Richard Nixon. The reason this was that the economic successes were largely failed to materialize and the attention of the United States applies increasingly Chile and its head of state, Salvador Allende.

Reactions

The reaction of Cuba fell only slightly. Although warned the Cuban leader from an even greater dependence on the U.S., but presented each country free to decide to join the Alliance.
