Allianz Swans Gmunden

The Allianz Swans Gmunden are a basketball club from Gmunden in Upper Austria. The Swans have won until 2007, three consecutive league titles in 2005 and also won the 2010 national championship. In addition Gmunden won a total of six titles in the cup competition, the last in 2012. Swans Thus the Austrian record holder in this event. The same applies for the Supercup, the Gmunden seven times could ( most recently in 2011 ) to win.

History

In 1965, the basketball section of the Union Gmunden was founded. After a year the first match was contested in the spring of 1966 already, which, however, was lost with 11:35. Then the climb was done in the Upper Austrian league and after a further two years of promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga four years later. After Union Gmunden seven years remained in this league, eventually followed under coach Otto Kienesberger the first time winning the Bundesliga 2 and the associated rise in the Austrian Bundesliga. Although it rose again from, but in the following years, the first legionnaires were finally obliged with which the Union Gmunden held between the first and second divisions.

In 1993, the biggest success: Sensational were the Swans, as the club was renamed as promoted third in the Bundesliga. After relegation in 1995, surprisingly, the rise in 1997 and from that time followed the Swans should follow in the 1st Bundesliga. After financial difficulties brought the club to the brink of collapse, a new association was founded.

Finally, could the Swans after they have left unused in the 2002/03 season with a 2-0 lead in the final two years later, in the 2004/05 season, winning their first Austrian Championship title. A success that they could repeat in each of the next two years.

ULEB Cup

In the 2007 /08 season, take the Allianz Swans Gmunden part in the ULEB Cup. This competition is the second most important European basketball competition after the ULEB Euro League. Already in the first competition game - an away game against Hapoel Galil Elion the Israeli team - was the first victory in the club's history in a European competition be achieved. In the penultimate group game, the Antwerp Giants were defeated with 80:69 and thus fixes the rise in the 1/16-Finale the ULEB Cup. Venue

The Allianz Swans play their home games from the 2500 -seat People's Bank Arena. After the 2007/ 08 season, this was expanded, as the hall with the original capacity of 1750 places for international competitions was too small and the Swans were allowed to participate only with an exemption on the ULEB Cup.
