Crocodile farms are farms, who specializes in the breeding and marketing of crocodiles and / or crocodile products. The main product is crocodile leather.

History

The first farms were established at the beginning of the 20th century. Initially, they were more like zoos as commercial breeding companies. However, when in the early 1960s first protective legislation came into force in order to protect the endangered crocodiles, this made ​​it necessary to refer crocodile leather farmed. This drove the price up and made the crocodile breeding farm into a lucrative business.

Nowadays there are two types of farms. The government-subsidized farms which breed the animals to replenish the wild population and the private companies that crocodiles market as a product.

The revenues of the most private crocodile farms come from the sectors of tourism and marketing of meat which has recently gained in popularity, as well as from the skins.

Crocodile farms are to be found wherever the still living 23 different crocodile, Gavial and alligator species are native. These are mainly Australia, large parts of Southeast Asia, Africa, and Central and South America, above all, the Amazon basin.
