Weißdorneule ( Allophyes oxyacanthae )

The Weißdorneule ( Allophyes oxyacanthae ) is a butterfly of the family of cutworms ( Noctudidae ), which is common in almost all of Europe except for the Iberian Peninsula, Iceland and Belarus.

Features

The moths have a wingspan of 35 to 45 millimeters. The front wings are usually brownish in color. Ring and kidney blemish are large and the Saumfeld in relation to the color brighter. At the rear and outer edge of the front wings are metallic - green scales. The hind wings are gray-brown.

Way of life

The caterpillars are from late April to late June mainly on hawthorn (Crataegus ), sour cherry (Prunus cerasus), apple trees (Malus ) and Pear (Pyrus ) to find. The caterpillars resting on tree branches during the day, there they are perfectly camouflaged because of its flat body shape. In the evening eat the younger stages the still fresh buds; the adult caterpillars eat leaves. The species is mainly found along forest edges and clearings. The moths fly in one generation from early September to late October. They fly to the light. The species overwinters as eggs and pupate in the soil.
