Description

Alluaudia procera grows as a tree -shaped, 6 to 10 meters, sometimes up to 15 meters tall shrub with a narrow crown of vertical shoots. On the shoots are in wavy to spiral rows many tapered and silver thorns, which are 10 to 25 millimeters long. The ovate to obovate leaves appear first individually below the thorns and are 7-25 mm long and 4-12 mm wide. Later, the leaves are in pairs and show with the narrow side facing up. The young leaves have a felt-like surface.

The yellowish to white flowers appear in large panicles 12-30 cm in diameter. The gyro- shaped fruits are 2-3 millimeters long.

Distribution and systematics

Alluaudia procera is common in the south and southwest of Madagascar on acidic or alkaline soils.

The first description of Alluaudia procera was as Didierea procera 1901 by Drake. In 1903 the same author presented the way in which he re- established species Alluaudia.
