Alluitsoq

Alluitsoq ( German name: Lichtenau ) is an abandoned settlement in southern Greenland. In 2007, she had six inhabitants. It belongs to the municipality Kujalleq ( until 1 January 2009 management community Nanortalik ). The Greenlandic name, Alluitsoq means something like "place with few seals breathing holes ".

Established in 1774 by the ship operator Oswald Bommes on Lichtenau Fjord as a mission station of the Moravian Church of South Greenland offered the protected environment relatively good opportunities for agriculture. From ancient times the historic Mission, the small church are still ( built in 1871 ) and preserved two historic cemeteries. A memorial stone commemorates the names of the missionaries working there. In its heyday in the 19th century Alluitsoq was one of the most densely populated places in Greenland, which, however, has completely lost with the end of the activity of the Moravian Church in 1900 its importance. 1900 Alluitsoq was handed over to the Danish government, which it a social center for alcohol addicts made ​​, which has now been closed. Alluitsoq is today a popular destination for hikers and cruise tourists.

Alluitsoq is the birthplace of the founder of modern Greenlandic as a written language, the German - Greenlander Samuel Kleinschmidt.
