Action

The series focuses on the life of the charismatic, self-centered, just as vulnerable as quick-witted Ally McBeal, a lawyer in Boston.

In the first three seasons of the series, the plot revolves around the strong emotion -heavy triangle of Ally with her childhood sweetheart Billy Thomas, who also works at the firm, and his wife, Georgia. With Billy's sudden death from a brain tumor in the third season shifted the action on Ally's most tragicomic search for the " right" partner and their suffering at being single. This seems the Detroit attorney Larry Paul to end happily in Season 4; However, the relationship fails to emotional residuals Larry.

With the final season 5 Ally finally finds its fulfillment not in a man, but in their ten year old daughter Maddie Harrington, which was conceived artificially in the course of an egg donation without knowledge Ally. Ally takes her daughter finally with him and eventually leaves for them in the final episode of their familiar surroundings to move to New York.

Other main characters are the law firm senior partner Richard Fish and John " gummy bear " ( Original: " Biscuit" ) Cage, which could not be drawn different: the former pragmatic and superficial, money and self-indulgent, always with a disrespectful flat dorms ( " Fishismus " ), the latter spun a little person who stutters and entirely in his own world, but at the same time an outstanding litigator.

Further facilities include Ally's frivolous fun-loving secretary Elaine Vassal, the frosty Topanwältin Nelle Porter and her friend Ling Woo, superficial as arrogant as aggressive, and Ally's pragmatic- loving roommate, the attorney Renee Radick, the solid cast of the series.

Besides the treatise usually represented as bizarre as emotional lawsuits, Ally and her colleagues in court, the interpersonal relationships, the changing partnerships, friendships and enmities within the firm play a central role in the plot of the series. The central meeting place of the figures within the firm is often the unisex toilet; after the events of the day usually meets most of the figures in the " Martini Bar " below the firm where the action is reflected and usually the singer Vonda Shepard occurs. Their catchy, folk -heavy songs, cover versions and original compositions usually have a symbolic character for Ally and her soul lives and also paint in other series during numerous scenes.

John Cage loves frogs, Barry White and all about Mexico. He suffers from obsessive-compulsive neuroses and he wins most of his cases. Whenever he marched into the court, he hears bells. Some of his bizarre quirks are:

  • If he is offended, he smiles often. This is due to a " Lächeltherapie ".
  • When he starts to stutter, he pronounces the word " Poughkeepsie " to overcome his stammer - often replacing it with the name of another city.
  • John " pauses " or he " collects " if he is of the opinion that it would be time for a pause for reflection.
  • He leaves the toilet cubicle often with a somersault, referred to him as " Isometric Exercise ".
  • When he looks at himself in the mirror, he often hears internally Barry White songs and dances to it.
  • If he is nervous, his nose whistles.
  • He suffers from symptoms of Tourette's syndrome. In the fourth season, he meets Melanie, who suffers from a more severe form of the disease. The relationship breaks down because John can not live with someone who does not want to get married and have children.

The figures Ally McBeal and Billy Thomas were as professional colleagues in an episode of the second season of the also created and produced by David E. Kelley series The Practice Lawyer (German: " Practice - The lawyers " ) on.

Actor Robert Downey Jr., who played the part of Ally's boyfriend Larry Paul, and Lisa Nicole Carson, who spent four years as Ally's roommate Renee to see Raddick, were both at the end of the fourth season because of their behavior on the set of their contracts dismissed.

The end of the series was initiated by the withdrawal of several protagonists through - were replaced new characters - only unsatisfactory for many viewers.
