Allysine is a derivative of lysine, which is a component of elastin and collagen.

By the action of the enzyme lysyl oxidase (also known as lysyl oxidase ) to lysine or hydroxylysine in the extracellular matrix or Hydroxyallysin allysine is produced and forms an integral part of the stabilizing cross-links in collagen and elastin. Chemically, it involves an oxidative deamination of the amino group of the side chain to the aldehyde. Allysin itself can with the aldehyde group of the same or adjacent Tropelastinmoleküle using an aldol condensation Allysinaldol and educate desmosine. Still existing lysine can form a Schiff base via its amino group with allysine wherein isodesmosine formed. In the degradation of lysine is produced as a metabolite in turn Allysin.
