The 1139 m high Almberg is located about 20 kilometers northeast of Freyung near the border between Germany and the Czech Republic. Its slopes are mainly used as a ski resort. On its eastern side lies Mitterfirmiansreu, which is targeted at the winter sports town with five lifts, one chairlift and an extensive trail network. There is held annually the Almberger telescope meeting.

In 2010, an artificial lake with a storage volume of approximately 28,000 cubic meters was erected at the entrance to the hamlet of Alpe, which is used to feed the snowmaking equipment in a ski center.

The summit plateau offers a panoramic view over the Bavarian Forest National Park with Rachel and Lusen. On clear days of autumn in the Northern Limestone Alps Föhneinfluss the Dead can be seen to the Zugspitze mountain.

The surrounding villages ( Philippsreut, rear -, Mitter and Vorderfirmiansreut ) were founded in the 17th century by the prince-bishops of Passau Lamberg and Firmian. Previously lived no people in this region. The nearest settlement was Mauth (about five miles from Mitterfirmiansreu ).
