Almeida Garrett

João Baptista da Silva Leitão de Almeida, Visconde de Garrett ( born February 4, 1799 in Porto, † December 9, 1854 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese novelist, poet, playwright and politician.

Almeida Garrett studied law at the Law Faculty of the University of Coimbra and practiced early in life with a large and flexible talent in all literary genres. Was His influence on Portuguese literature and is still remarkable. On top of that he of all the great writers of the 19th century is the one that is most read by the younger generation, studied and respected. His role as a politician was no less impressive than that of the writer. Some of his speeches in Parliament were famous, so you can assume that he was not only able to always find the right words, but these carry forward in an effective manner. Nevertheless, it was in poetry and in the theater, where the name of Almeida Garrett achieved immortality.

In 1836 he was commissioned by the government with the establishment of a national theater and a theater school, and then the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II and the National Conservatory (now the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema) emerged.
