Almeirim is a city in the Portuguese region of Ribatejo. It is ( as Sopa Pedra ) known in the country as the capital of stone soup, a nationally popular specialty.

History

Finds evidence of a settlement since the Paleolithic period, particularly numerous in the circle are excavations of the Iron Age. During the Roman conquest in the 2nd century BC outsourced Decimus Junius Brutus Callaicus here, in connection with his crossing of the Tagus River in Santarém. The Romans practiced here in connection livestock and built especially for cereals and olives. The Roman road from Olisipo (now Lisbon ) to Emerita Augusta (now Mérida ) was here. After the conquest of the Roman Lusitania by Germanic tribes from the 5th century, the trace of the place largely loses.

Today's Almerim built in the 15th century, in the year 1411. Way, King D. João I build the royal palace and the first houses 1411-1423, and King D. The A13 motorway ends here, coming from south Marateca, and connects the village to the motorway network in the country. About the removed from Expressway IC10 Almeirim is also connected to the 8 km north -lying district capital of Santarém. There is also the nearest railway connection to the Linha do Norte.

The Stone Soup

The name of this soup is based on a fairy tale that exists in several versions. The basic idea: A monk is very hungry, but has nothing to eat, only a pot.
