Almon Heath Read

Almon Heath Read ( born June 12, 1790 in Shelburne, Vermont, † June 3, 1844 in Montrose, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician. Between 1842 and 1844 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Read Almon attended until 1811 the Williams College in Williamstown (Massachusetts ). Between 1815 and 1820 he was employed as a county clerk at the District Administration in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. After a subsequent law degree in 1816 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he started in Montrose to work in this profession. In the 1820s he joined the movement to the later U.S. President Andrew Jackson and became a member of the Democratic Party, founded in 1828 by this. From 1827 to 1832 Read was a deputy in the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania; 1833 to 1837 he was a member of the State Senate. In 1840 he was Minister of Finance ( State Treasurer ) of Pennsylvania.

After the death of Mr Davis Dimock Read was due to the election as his successor in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he took up his new mandate on 18 March 1842. After a re-election, he could remain until his death on June 3, 1844 in Congress. This period was characterized by the tensions between President John Tyler and the Whigs. It was also at that time already been discussed about a possible annexation of the independent Republic of Texas since 1836 by Mexico.
