Alois Riegl

Alois Riegl (born 14 January 1858 in Linz, † June 17, 1905 in Vienna ) was an Austrian art historian, conservationists and representatives of the Vienna School of Art History (see also Formalism ( Art History) ).

Work

Riegl coined the theory of art the influential notion of artistic intent as a defining force an epoch. He turned towards a values -based judgments on art history and emphasized the importance of the force at that time as " decay times" eras ( late antiquity ). In his view, the ancient art starting point is both the early medieval as well as Oriental art.

Influential also were Riegl's concepts in terms of conservation. Similarly, Georg Dehio in Germany pleaded Riegl against the spread in the 19th century " perfection " and the purifizierenden continued construction of historic buildings (such as Gothic cathedrals ). Unlike Dehio rather are national monument view Riegl represented but a supra- national and universalist embossed monument term, represents the core of the old value. ( Riegl's ideational value system different present values and memory values . Among the present values he counted the use value and the relative artistic value to the memory values the historical value and the areas highlighted by him age value. ) Riegl turned, among other things, in the case of Diocletian's Palace in Split against a Herausschälung of Ancient Monuments and eliminate the later also had already become historic additions.

Riegl was a university professor at the University of Vienna. 1904-1905 was Riegl curator general of the Central Commission for the Study and Conservation of art and historical monuments, today's Bundesdenkmalamt. His many years of efforts to an Austrian Denkmalschutzgesetz were not very successful, although it largely to address your concerns private memorial owner (nobility, church) against the risk of financial burdens was ready.

In 1954 in Vienna Floridsdorf ( 21st district ) was named the Rieglgasse after him.
