Alonso de Arellano

Alonso de Arellano was a Spanish navigator of the 16th century.

In 1559 he located together with Andrés de Urdaneta in the wake of Miguel López de Legazpi, who by order of King Philip II is to explore a route from East Asia to America. For this, the fleet broke out on November 21, 1564, first in La Navidad (Mexico ) in order to establish the Philippines first Spanish base Cebu. There Arellano deserted with his ship, the San Lucas, and made their own way back. At the same time ( June 1, 1565) Legazpi sent Urdaneta and his navigator on the journey back to Mexico. Since this was devious but by storms far to the north, it was Arellano, who arrived first again in La Navidad. It was not until about three months later, also completed Urdaneta, the crossing, but landed in Acapulco.

Since Urdaneta brought the detailed records of the chosen route for a long time the honor fell to him to have explored the Pacific route from Asia to Mexico.

Arellano was taken to court after his return due to the statements of Urdaneta about his desertion in Spain.
