Aloyzas Sakalas

Aloyzas Sakalas ( born July 6, 1931 in anykščiai, Lithuania) is a Lithuanian politician and scientist. Sakala is a member of the European Parliament for the party Lietuvos socialdemokratų partija ( LSDP ) since 2004.

Sakala acquired in 1960 a university degree in engineering at the Polytechnic Institute of Kaunas and worked from 1960 to 1962 as an engineer at the Institute for electrophotography. He received his doctorate in 1970, associate professor in 1972 and his habilitation in 1977 in physics and mathematics. From 1980 was Sakalas professor and from 1982 to 1990 lecturer, associate professor and professor at the University of Vilnius.

Sakala from 1989 to 1991 Member of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party ( LSDP ) and had between 1991 and 1999 the presidency of the party held. Since 1999 he is honorary chairman of the LSDP. Sakala was between 1990 and 2004 the Lithuanian Parliament ( Seimas ) on. He was also from 1990 to 1992 chairman and board member of the Verification Committee, 1992-1996 Vice- President of the Parliament from 2000 to 2004 Chairman of the Legal Committee. In 2004 he moved to the European Parliament. In addition, Sakala from 1993 to 2004 Chairman of the organization " Help the Lithuanian children."
