ALP-45DP

The Bombardier ALP- 45DP is a dual-mode locomotive is manufactured by Bombardier Transportation. Customers are the New Jersey Transit ( NJT ) in the U.S. and the Agence métropolitaine de transport (AMT) in Montreal ( Canada). ALP- 45DP is 5 ( MVA / transformer output ) Dual Power for American Locomotive Passenger 4 ( Axels / axes).

History

The NJT needed a locomotive, the commuter trains from the non-electrified network located in New Jersey suburbs of New York throughout can carry the station in Pennsylvania. Because the tunnel under the Hudson River may only be driven by electric vehicles, the engine next to the diesel drive must also have a full electric propulsion with power supply from the catenary.

The AMT followed on the order of NJT because of Mont -Royal tunnel may only be driven by electric vehicles also, the route network is not electrified until the line to the Deux- Montagnes.

Design features

The challenge in building the locomotive was both an electrical drive equipment to accommodate the need for AC railway transformer as well as a complete diesel-electric propulsion equipment in a four-axle locomotive and thereby maintain the required 33 tons axle load. This would have been impossible to achieve with the usual in America slow speed diesel engines, which is why the choice fell on two -speed diesel engines of Caterpillar, which is opposite to the slow-speed engines have a higher power density. The motors are electrically connected in parallel to the DC link of the converter, which supplies the AC drive motors and three-phase train line with energy.

The locomotive is based used locomotives of the German series 186 in the electrical equipment on the NJT ALP- 46A, which have similar power converters such as the Bombardier TRAXX. In order to create additional space for the propulsion equipment, the locomotive body was extended and omitted a cab, which is not a disadvantage in the locomotive used exclusively in the push-pull operation.

The twelve- cylinder engines from Caterpillar Model 3512C HD. This is otherwise mainly used in ships and in the energy supply of rigs application. The generators are induction motors, which are also used to start the diesel engine. When braking energy is fed back into the catenary system or converted via a braking resistor to heat. The electric energy supplied by a current collector, which is mounted in the rear area of the roof. The cooling equipment for the driving equipment are housed in the roof over the respective pieces of equipment.
