α -ketoglutaric acid (2- oxoglutaric acid, 2- Oxopentandisäure ) is one which derives from n-pentane dicarboxylic acid bearing a carbonyl group on the additional α - C atom. It forms colorless, virtually odorless crystals. Its salts are called α - ketoglutarate. They act as intermediate products of metabolism, such as in the citric acid cycle or in important steps of nitrogen metabolism in appearance.
