Alpha (navigation)

Alpha ( official name RSDN - 20, wherein RSDN for Radiotechnitscheskaja Sistema Daljokoi Nawigazii, Russian Радиотехническая Система Дальней Навигации, Radio Technical remote navigation system is available, ) is a Russian system for radio navigation in the frequency range of the longitudinal waves. Its functioning conforms to the international OMEGA system, that was until 1997.

The Alpha system consists of five stations on the territory of the former Soviet Union, whose range but far beyond that / went. The tall, probably radiating transmitting masts near Novosibirsk ( master station ), Krasnodar, Komsomolsk-on- Amur ( because of the location in the Khabarovsk region often given as Khabarovsk ) and Rewda ( Kola Peninsula ) in Russia and north-west of Turkmenabat in Turkmenistan (17 km west of the city seydi, formerly russian Neftesawodsk ). These stations broadcast each rated at 3.6 seconds long signals on the frequencies 11.905 kHz, 12.649 kHz and 14.881 kHz. From the phase difference of the received signals, the location can be determined by hyperbolic.

Since the system of military secrecy subject, there is little official information. The transmitter seydi to be out of service today. First test signals could be collected in the USA in 1962. The transmitter chain Krasnodar - Novosibirsk - Komsomolsk went into operation in 1968; its extension from the west to the far east of Russia suggests that it was designed for military navigation by the U.S. polar region to South Asia and the Indian Ocean. In addition to air navigation, the long waves allow (as in OMEGA ) and the navigation of submarines.
