Alphanumeric

An alphanumeric character is in the strict sense either a letter or a digit. In a broader sense, it is a digit, a letter or a special character (eg, comma, brackets). The term is used in telecommunications and computer technology.

The assignment of keyboard character is specified in the applicable for Germany and Austria DIN 2137.

The term alphanumeric character is most often used to delimit numeric ( digits only ) and hexadecimal ( hex digits only ).

Use

Alphanumeric is often used to define a character set or code or to describe the properties and possibilities of an input or output device.
