History

The area around Alphen was already inhabited 2000 years ago. In Roman times the Oude Rijn was the main arm of the Rhine. Due to the deposits of the river originated higher up the shore areas. In Alphen this is still on the naming of neighborhoods " Hoge zijde ," and " zijde " ( " High " or "deep side " ) in the left or right bank recognizable. In today's center of the city the Romans built the castellum Albanianae ( "settlement at the white water"), of which probably the name Alphen derived. The Romans built the first bridge over the Oude Rijn. Today there are five bridges over the Oude Rijn, two of which are released only for pedestrians. Since the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius ( 41-54 AD ) were stationed to defend the northern frontier on the Rhine Roman soldiers in Albanianae. In the nearby village Zwammerdam remains of a Roman castellum were found. Due to the resulting trade, Alphen became an important trading center in the region. Germanic raids ended, however, this year 204

After many general problems and flooding, especially in Utrecht and Leiden Oude Rijn was abgedeicht 1122 at Wijk bij Duurstede. The Lek said arm was thus the main branch of the Rhine water. At the Oude Rijn, there has been no more flooding since then. In the 17th century, Alphen further developed as a hub of trade over land and water. The church today Alphen was created in 1918 by merging the municipalities of Alphen, Aarlanderveen and Oudshoorn. 1964 the village was incorporated Zwammerdam.

In October 2001, Alphen was chosen as the greenest city in the Netherlands. In September 2002, Alphen this title was awarded Europe. On April 9, 2011, the shooting rampage in Alphen, which killed eight people and a further 17 were injured occurred.

The municipalities of Alphen aan den Rijn, Boskoop and Rijnwoude merged on January 1, 2014. The new church has around 106,000 inhabitants and takes over the existing name Alphen aan den Rijn.
