Alpheus (mythology)

Alpheius (Greek Ἀλφειός ) is a river god in Greek mythology. He is one of the sons of Oceanus and Tethys. Homer mentions as his son the Orsilochos whose mother Pausanias the Telegone is.

He fell in love with the legend, the nymph Arethusa, although not return his affection. To escape him, the nymph transformed into a river flows underground from Greece through Hades ( the underworld ) and comes as a source in Syracuse in Sicily back to the surface. Alpheius but was transformed into the river Alfios in the Peloponnese, but his search in the sea water still after the nymph.
