Alphonse Group

The Alphonse Group is a group of islands belonging to the Republic of Seychelles. It is located in the Indian Ocean about 403 km south-west of Mahé largest island and 87 km south of Amiranten. In the Seychelles, the Alphonse Group is one of the so-called Outer Islands.

Was discovered the island group on January 28, 1730 by Alphonse de Pontevez Knight, commander of the French frigate Le Lys.

The group consists of two atolls, the Alphonse Atoll in the north, named after the discoverer of the archipelago, as well as and the Saint -François Atoll in the south, named after Saint Francis de Sales ( Saint François de Sales).

The total land area of ​​all islands in the group is 1.936 km ², including the surface of the lagoon about 53 km ². The Alphonse atoll is inhabited and has a small airfield, the Saint -François Atoll is uninhabited and can be reached by Alphonse by boat.
