For God so loved the world ( BWV 68) is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach. He composed it in Leipzig for the second Pfingstfesttag and led them on 21 May 1725 the first time.

History and words

Bach wrote the cantata for 2 Pfingstfesttag. The prescribed readings for the feast were Acts 10.16-21 LUT and LUT Jn 3.16 to 21, the meeting of Jesus with Nicodemus. In his second year in office Leipzig Bach had to Palm Sunday consistently composed chorale cantatas for his second cantata cycle from the first Sunday after Trinity, but was passed over for Easter again cantatas on freer textual basis. These included nine cantatas on texts of the poet Christiana Mariana von Ziegler, including the Cantata for the 2nd day of Pentecost. Bach and arranged them on Ascension alone later his second cantata cycle, even though they are not based on a chorale, but start with a chorale fantasy. Start The other seven cantatas of the author, who predominantly with a bass solo as Vox Christi ( voice of Christ ), he took the other hand, in the third cantata cycle.

The poet chose for the first set of Pentecost cantata with the first verse of Solomon Liscows Hymn (1675 ), which begins with the same words as the words of the Gospel: "For God so loved the world ". The last sentence of five-movement work she quoted verse 18 of the Gospel, the Bach worked in an unusually extensive choral setting.

Bach led the cantata on 21 May 1725 for the first time.

Scoring and structure

The cantata is occupied by two vocal soloists ( soprano and bass), four-part choir, horn, zinc, three trumpets, two oboes, taille ( tenor oboe ), two violins, viola and basso continuo. The cantata contains five sets.

Music

The opening chorus is a chorale fantasy, as in Bach's chorale cantatas. The melody of Gottfried Vopelius ( 1682) is sung by the soprano and amplified by the horn. Bach changed the rhythm of the melody to 12/8-Takt and decorated them.

The two arias are based on Bach's Cantata hunting What pleases me is only the sprightly hunting, BWV 208 The soprano aria " My faithful heart " is based on an aria of the goddess Pales "Because want ranging herds ". Bach uses obbligato instrument as a cello piccolo one, as in other cantatas of his second cycle ( 1724-25 ). The bass aria is based on an aria of the god Pan, " A prince is his country Pan".

The last sentence is not, as in most church cantatas a simple four-part chorale, but a large-scale structure to a verse of John's Gospel. Bach expresses the contrast of "who believeth in him " and "nothing but believeth " out in a double fugue with two contrasting themes, the votes from the zinc (soprano) and three trombones (alto and bass) are amplified.
