Alstahaug is a municipality in Nordland, Norway. The administrative headquarters with city status is Sandnessjøen. The municipality consists of the island Alsten and some 920 other islands.

History

Archeology can prove a settlement since the Iron Age. The lying in the town of Good Tjøtta was the home of Øyvind Skaldespiller, the last major Skalden Norway. Hårek of Tjøtta took over the farm who was together with the seat Torolv Kveldulvssons, Sandnes Gård, the center of power Hålogalands in the 10th century and during the Middle Ages. The Good Tjøtta, one of the largest in North Norway came in 1350 in church property, was after the Reformation Krongut 1632 and came into possession of the bailiff of Helgeland Peter Jakobsson Falck and his descendants.

Petter Dass was from 1689 until his death in 1707 pastor in Alstahaug. From 1805 to 1828 Alstahaug was the first episcopal see in northern Norway.
