Alsunga

Alsunga ( German: Alswangen, Curonian: vanga = alder glade ALSU ) is a city in the west of Latvia.

History

Upon excavation, there is evidence that the place was already inhabited in the 10th century of cures. The place name is on record in 1231 in a peace treaty. 1372 a castle was founded by the Teutonic Knights. 1567 was the squire Friedrich von Kanitz build a school and church. After 1623 Alswangen was due to the transfer of the landed gentry to the center of Catholicism in the otherwise Lutheran Kurland.

The community acts since 2009 novads as Alsungas.
