Alta Mesa AVA

Alta Mesa AVA ( recognized since 2006) is an American Viticultural Area in the U.S. state of California and is part of the Lodi AVA regional. The area extends within the administrative unit Sacramento County. The Spanish name Alta Mesa (translated high table ) alludes to the higher compared to the surrounding location of a plateau.

Geography and climate

The clayey soil is heavily interspersed with gravel and forces the vines to a deep root system. The area is known for extremely low amount of precipitation and is considered by the appellation Sloughhouse AVA as the warmest in the parent American Viticultural Area Lodi.

History

The appellation Alta Mesa AVA has been recognized by the government on 17 July 2006 by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau.

Wineries

Currently there are no vineyard situated in the territory, the wines under the appellation Alta Mesa marketed. It is up to the time of wineries the parent Lodi AVA to use the appellation in which they buy up grapes and develop separately. The farms Barreto Cellars and Twisted Oak Winery are examples.
