Alte Emscher

The Old Emscher Landscape Park Duisburg-Nord

The Old Emscher is a 7.8 km long oxbow lake of the river Emscher in Duisburg with a catchment area of 29.2 km ². It represents the original route of the River Emscher mouth

Significant subsidence in the area of Meiderich Beeck and Bruckhausen led in 1900 to the fact that the water of the Emscher could not drain the natural gradient in the Rhine and gathered. 1910 therefore moved the Emschergenossenschaft the mouth of the course further north, in the course of today's little Emscher.

In the deepest point of the drainage valley of the Old Emscher the cooperative built in 1914 the pumping station Alte Emscher.

For a long time the bayou an open, channeled, aboveground wastewater stream for domestic and industrial wastewater. Began in 1995 with the construction of underground, separate sewers, first in the Landscape Park Duisburg -Nord ( LaPaDu ), which the Old Emscher pervades over 3 km in length. The tubes have a diameter of 1.0 to 4.4 meters, they lead the wastewater directly to the sewage plant Duisburg Old Emscher. At the same time, the river was ecologically improved and raised the recreational value by the Emscher promenade and similar measures.

1999, the conversion was complete, since flows in the bed of the Old Emscher only rain water, which mostly comes from the impervious areas of the country park. On the so-called " water path ", the rainwater is directed ( site of the former cooling towers) in two series-connected water basins, subsequent to polishing ponds and then discharged with a time delay in the Old Emscher ( stormwater retention system ). With the help of the wind turbine at the Emscher Promenade part of the water is lifted into the tower and then transported to the bunker gardens. If it is not needed there it flows back through pipes to the clarified water running and falls into it open so it is enriched with oxygen.

The Old Emscher is cut off from the river system in the Emscher, only drained their immediate catchment areas in the north of Duisburg and Oberhausen west and then lifts the water at kilometer 788.5 as a right tributary of the Rhine.
