History

The Benedictine Abbey of Altenburg, founded in 1144, the story of Altenburg significantly influenced. The church today Altenburg has been created from the merger of Altenburg ( with the districts Burgerwiesen and Steinegg ) and Mahrersdorf to January 1, 1968 and the annexation of Fuglau January 1, 1970.

La Tène settlement at Kamp

In the Kamp loop ( Umlaufberg ) at Altenburg Latène a Celtic settlement was excavated in the first third of the 20th century. Fireplaces, iron-melting furnace, stone circles and pavements were uncovered. Of finds stray finds from the Neolithic period were ( 11500-2200 BC) and the Hallstatt period ( 800-475 BC), but above all from the La Tène period ( 5th to 1st century BC ) available.
