Altered scale

The altered scale or altered scale is a diatonic scale, which is used mainly in jazz. It is an improvisation scale, the opposite of the usual major and minor scales and modes contains many altered tones.

Construction

It is formed by that lowered from the major scale starting all sounds except the root by a semitone.

Example 1:

Another method for the construction of this scale is to increase the root note of a major scale by a half step and leave all other sounds unchanged. Uses: chromatic bass line.

Example 2:

One other way of looking after the Superlokrische scale on the seventh stage of Melodic Minor. The Superlokrische scale is reinterpreted in the Altered scale:

Example 3:

The altered scale can also be formed as lokrischer mode with reduced fourth. Uses: The chord Hm7/b5 first interpreted as lokrischer chord of a major scale ( 7th level of C major ) and not immediately as raised 7th degree of a minor scale ( 7th level of melodic A minor ) is detected.

Properties

The altered scale represents the following properties is a special case among all heptatonic scale is:

  • It has both the minor third and the major third ( enharmonic reinterpretation of diminished fourth), so their is no scale type to assign. In practice, it is however set with dominant seventh chords in conjunction. This in turn means that evaluates the major third as such. The minor third, however, is interpreted in this context as excessive None ( # 9).
  • It is neither a perfect fourth or a perfect fifth to the tonic.
  • The Tonvorrat similar to the scale mixolydian # 11 or lydian b7 ( mixolydian or lydian with increased fourth with tiefalterierter seventh), mounted on the tritone of the root of the altered scale. Thus, c- altered owns ( enharmonically reversed) Tonvorrat same as F # mixolydian # 11 See also: Tritonussubstitution.
  • Other relationships exist too melodic minor ( built on the minor second above the root ) and to lydian augmented ( lydian with increased fifth), built on the major third of the altered scale. So c- altered is equal to F # mixolydian # 11, the same fis - lydian b7 equal to the minor melodic, equal to e - lydian - augmented.
