Geographical Location

Altertheim is located approximately 16 kilometers southwest of Würzburg and bordered by the Baden-Württemberg Main- Tauber-Kreis. Passing through the municipality, the state road 2297th In about five kilometers away is a connection to the federal highways 3 and 81

History

Upper and lower Altertheim were first mentioned in a document from the year 775. The present municipality was formerly a part of the county Castell, which lay in the Frankish Empire Circle from 1500. 1806 lower and Oberaltertheim were mediated in Bavaria's favor. The villages were in 1810 ( Grenzpurifikation ) left the Grand Duchy of Würzburg of Archduke Ferdinand of Tuscany, with whom she finally fell to Bavaria in 1814. In the course of administrative reform in Bavaria emerged with the community of 1818 the municipalities.

On June 28, 1825 a fire broke out, in which a large part of Oberaltertheim fell victim to the flames.

On 1 May 1978, the formerly independent communities Oberaltertheim, Steinbach near Würzburg and sub Altertheim were merged in the course of municipal reform to the new community Altertheim. In 1997 there were minor boundary changes over the Baden-Württemberg community Werbach.

On 27 June 1978, a helicopter of the U.S. armed forces crashed into sub Altertheim. The nine occupants of the helicopter died.

Religions

The community is predominantly Lutheran. The Mission Society Liebenzeller mission has become established. There are also members of the Roman Catholic Church.

Policy

The current mayor Adolf Hemrich - Manderbach ( future Altertheim ) triggered 24 years of service to the community standing Alfred Hemrich, Independent Civic Association (UB ) as mayor from 1 May 2008. Its representatives in office are the deputy mayor Elmar Kuhn (UB ) from Steinbach and the third Mayor Reinhold Drack (UB ) of sub Altertheim. All 14 councilors belong to the list of independent civil association.

The municipal tax revenue in 2006 amounted to approximately 650,000 euros, of which 35,000 business tax receipts ( net). The debt per capita amounted to 529 and so 181 euros less than the national average in Bavaria.

Coat of arms

Description of coat of arms: square of red and silver; in 1 and 4 each a silver heraldic rose with golden slugs. Red and Silver: belonging to Castell, silver rose: belonging to Wertheim.

Historical justification for the coat of arms: The merged in the new municipality Altertheim communities Oberaltertheim, Steinbach near Würzburg and sub Altertheim once belonged to the dominion of the counts of Wertheim; according to their extinction ( 1556 ) went through this area to the Count's house Castell. The Castellsche coat of arms shows the so-called crossing of red and silver; as a badge of the Counts of Wertheim applies the silver heraldic rose. In the present form, the union of these two symbols since 1967 served as a municipal coat of arms Oberaltertheim. The newly formed community Altertheim has taken this coat in an unchanged form.

Synagogue

In the district Oberaltertheim existed until the time of the Nazi dictatorship, a synagogue, whose establishment was demolished during the pogrom of November 1938. The small Jewish community existed until 1942, when the remaining Jewish families were deported to extermination during the Holocaust. At the fire station in the fence gap 2 is a commemorative plaque on the house of God and his extinguished community.

In the district of Altertheim still exists a synagogue in Fountain Street. This however, has been converted into a warehouse of a local painter and Verputzerfirma.
