Althaea (mythology)

Althaea (Greek Ἀλθαία ) In Greek mythology, the daughter of Thestios and Eurythemis. The siblings of Althaea are Leda and Hypermnestra and their four brothers Iphiklos, Euippos, Plexippus and Eurypylos .. She is the wife of Oineus, king of Calydon, and the children had with this Tydeus, Meleager and Deianeira.

Seven days after the birth of Meleager, the three Fates, Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos published. They announced that their son live as long as the burning logs on the hearth was not consumed by the fire. Althaea put out the fire and saved the piece of wood on to get Meleager alive. When her son killed Althaias brothers later, they burned the stored logs. Thus died as the Fates predicted her son Meleager.
