Altheim, Biberach

Altheim is a municipality in the district of Biberach in Baden- Württemberg. It lies on the Danube, in the immediate vicinity of the city Riedlingen.

In addition to the eponymous district Altheim consist Heiligkreuztal and Waldhausen.

History

Altheim was first mentioned in the year 835. It was originally under the rule of the Counts of Veringen before it came in 1300 in the Habsburg possession. Since the end of the 16th century the village was - managed by the Steward of Waldburg, which with many other towns sold to the Princes of Thurn and Taxis 1786 - still under Habsburg rule. In 1806 Altheim as a result of the Act of Confederation, and the related media coverage to the Kingdom of Württemberg. There it was added to the upper office Riedlingen. With the district reform in 1938 Altheim came to the district Saulgau. Since 1973 it belongs to the district of Biberach.

In earlier times the Altheimer were derided as "sun and moon catcher " what the Swabian dialect poet Michel Buck Ertingen from about 1888 to his original poem D animated Sundays and Mau'fanger.

A Church in Altheim was first mentioned in documents in 1227. It is the Catholic St. Martin's Church.

Incorporations

On 1 July 1974, the formerly independent communities Heiligkreuztal and Waldhausen were incorporated.

Coat of arms

In the municipal archives Altheim a coat of arms letter from Emperor Leopold I of 21 January 1681 obtained which contains the following description coat of arms next to a figure: A three-part shield, the middle part red or ruby, but the upper yellow or gold; basically the shield abutting a white or silver creek or river next to a mind and slightly elevated green shores or banks on this one with the rear feet quite upright and einwärtssehender beaver in its natural color, with überschlagendem tail, gaping mouth and rotausschlagender tongue; the Austrian holding shield in the front two feet. To the whole plate around with Latin letters afterwards these words: Althaimb on Piberpach 1681st

This coat of arms leads the community to this day.

Culture and sights

Altheim is located on the Upper Swabian Baroque Route.

Structures

  • Church of St. Martin, with frescoes by Franz Joseph Spiegler
  • Hohmichele in the district Heiligkreuztal: grave mounds from the Hallstatt period, with almost 80 m diameter and 14 m height one of the largest grave mound in Central Europe, excavated 1937/1938 by Gustav Riek. In the hills 13 burials were found, one of which is proved by numerous grave goods.
  • Kloster Heiligkreuztal, a former convent of the Cistercian Order: Heiligkreuztal is the best preserved of the six former Cistercian monasteries in Swabia. Pious women from Altheim that the location in the neighborhood Good Wassershaf (now Wasserschapfen ) received as a gift from the knight Conrad of Mark Village, 1227 were the founders of the monastery, were recorded in 1233 in the Cistercian Order, 1238 in the protection of the monastery of Salem Church and Monastery were consecrated in 1256, by 1490 extended to 1551 in late Gothic style. The monastery came in 1611 leading to Austria. The 1690 to 1752 restored monastery buildings were secularized in 1804 and abandoned in 1843 by the nuns. Since 1972 it is used by restoration and expansion as a training institute Stefanus educational institution.
