Altkirchen

Altkirchen is a municipality in the Thuringian district Altenburger Land. She is a member and after Stark Mountain the population second largest municipality in the administrative community Altenburger Land.

History

A church was built in Altkirchen 1079-1089 and consecrated by Bishop Gunther of Naumburg. After several destructions by fire in 1140 it was replaced by a stone. The patronage of the church was the 1192 St. Mary's Hospital in Altenburg transferred from Emperor Henry IV, from 1213, however, exercised by the Teutonic Knights, since this the St. Mary's Hospital had fallen now. After the secularization of the Order whose possessions were sold in 1593 by order of the Elector John Frederick of Saxony. However, after this defeated and taken prisoner 24th April 1547 at the Battle of Miihlberg by imperial troops and had to give up a large part of his tenure at Duke Moritz of Saxony, this forced sale was undone by a command of the Emperor Charles V.. It was only in 1594 sold the German Order's possessions around Altkirchen.

In GDR times, was Altkirchen not only showcase the circle Schmölln community, but the entire district Leipzig.

Since the local elections of 7 June 2009, the council is composed as follows:

  • WG CDU 5 seats ( 42.8 %)
  • Bürgerbew. 7 seats ( 57.2 %)

The turnout was 66.4 %.

Culture and sights

  • Village Museum Altkirchen: In the village was in 1982 a home office set up, in addition to geological and archaeological objects also shows some magnificent peasant costumes from the Altenburger Land, agricultural and craft equipment and natural history showpieces. In the five exhibition halls the history and tradition of the place and the area is clear. Among the natural objects includes the Göllnitzer miracle tree - a fruit growing from a knowledgeable priest by 329- fold plant breeding optimized apple tree.
