Altlay

Altlay is a municipality in the district Cochem-Zell, in Rhineland -Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality of Zell an (Mosel).

Geography

Altlay located in the northern part of the Hunsrück between the airport Hahn and the Moselle at an altitude of about 300 m above sea level. North of the village of Altlayer creek flows through a narrow valley in the Mosel.

History

The place was first mentioned in 1107 as Leia. To 1489 shale mining is then mentioned near Altlay. Beginning in 1794, Altlay under French rule. 1815 it to the Congress of Vienna was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia. Under the Prussian administration came Altlay 1816 for mayor Sohren in the district Zell, who belonged to the Rhine Province to the Region of Koblenz and from 1822 on.

Shale mining

Today the remains of the former industrial plants are still visible. The winding tower was mined as early as the 1960s, the remaining buildings are left to decay.
