Altmann (1905 automobile)

The Altmann motor vehicle -Werke GmbH was a German producer of steam automobiles, who was a resident from 1905 to 1907 in Brandenburg ( Havel ). Founder was Adolf Altmann. He is taken in conjunction with tractors and electric cars.

Occasionally Adolf Altmann is even named as the inventor of the steam tractor.

Steam cars were generally less common than in Germany as in France, the United Kingdom or the United States. The cars of Altmann regarded as progressive and independent constructions. They were equipped with three-cylinder steam engines, which submitted a power of 25 hp ( 18.4 kW).

As Gardner Serpollet ordered the Altmann - machine with a device for controlling the valve opening times. The condensate was collected and returned to the boiler, a principle that is the worldwide leader Stanley introduced until 1915. The capacitor in the car front was attached. Under the driver's seat, the machine, the boiler and other important components were housed. The water tank was sitting in the rear. The power transmission to the rear wheels via a drive chain was called Altmann drive chain.

After a fatal accident at the owner, the company had to be closed before it came to a well-known production. Probably also an electric car has been set for the same reason, of which it is only known that it has been built in small numbers.
