Altnau

Altnau ( in local dialect [ ɑ̞ltnɑʊ̯ ] ) is a village and a municipality in the district of Kreuzlingen in the canton of Thurgau.

Geography

Altnau is located on the southern shore of Lake Constance on the moraine of the former Rhine glacier and borders the municipalities Güttingen, Langrickenbach and Munsterlingen.

History

In the year 787 the village was first mentioned in documents as Althinouva. The place name is composed either from the Old High German personal name Alto / Aldo or the adjective old and the rear limb OHDP, land on the water, Au '.

The village was heavily agricultural until the mid 20th century. Today, around 20 % of the approximately 450 Altnauer jobs in the primary sector are still located.

Culture and sights

In Altnau is the first fruit trail of Switzerland. The nine kilometer long circuit through the localnear orchards and explained to 16 panels the way the apple of flowering to fruit.

Since 2010 Altnau has a boat jetty, which is 270 meters long because of the wide zone of shallow water - making it the longest pier on the lake.

Partnership

Altnau has the directly opposite on the north shore of Lake Constance, located Hagnau Germany in friendly contacts that result from the Seegfrörnen of Lake Constance in 1830, 1880 and 1963. The Hagnauer groups that explored the passability of the frozen lake at the beginning of Seegfrörne were always amicably received in Altnau ( and Güttingen ). Students of Hagnau and Altnau visit then each other.
