Alto Alentejo Province

Alto Alentejo ( Portuguese for Upper Beyond - the -Tejo ) was from 1936 to 1976 one of the eleven provinces of Portugal. They exist today only in the vernacular or historically based terms.

Évora was the capital of the province. It included the area now Évora District and most of the Portalegre District, excluding the County of Ponte de Sor, who belonged to the Ribatejo.

The term of the Alto Alentejo referred in today's administrative divisions of Portugal, only the statistical subregion of Alto Alentejo.
