Alton (Hampshire)

Alton is a small market town in the southwest of Farnham in the East Hampshire District. 1991 had 16,584 inhabitants.

History

Alton was the scene of many events of national importance. In the year 1001 it came with a Danish invasion to the first Battle of Alton, who won the Danes.

The Treaty of Alton from the year 1101 was an agreement between King Henry I of England and his older brother Robert II Curthose, Duke of Normandy. In this agreement, Duke Robert Heinrich recognized as King of England. In return, Robert received annual cash benefits and other concessions from Henry.

1643 occurred in the English Civil War to the Battle of Alton. Here, over 700 Royalists were captured. Even today you can see the bullet holes in the church.
