Altviller

Altviller ( German: Altweiler ) is a commune of 566 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Moselle in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district Forbach, in the canton of Saint- Avold -1 and the Local Government Association Pays naborien.

Geography

Altviller is about five kilometers southeast of Saint- Avold, near the border with Saarland at an altitude of 270 meters above the sea. Through the south of the village flows the upper Nied Allemande ( German Nied ). 72 hectares of its territory is covered by forest (Risch students and Laengerbusch in the West, Liebusch in the north, Bois des Saints ( Holy Busch) in the east).

Neighboring communities of Altviller are Lachambre in the northeast, Vahl- Ebersing in the south, Folschviller in the southwest as well as Valmont in the northwest.

History

In 1221 the name Altviller first appears in a deed of the Abbey Wadgassen.

Attractions

The church of Saint - Rémi is dedicated Remigius of Reims. It was built on the foundations of an older church from 1808, which was built in 1725. The church belongs to the Roman Catholic parish community of Notre- Dame du Vahl, which is part of the diocese of Metz.

Economy and infrastructure

Altviller has become a residential area for commuters from the mainly northern industrial and commercial areas since the 1980s. In the village there is a bakery and small craft. Agriculture also plays a role in Altviller.

The nearby town of Saint- Avold allows convenient inter-regional transport links by road and rail ( Autoroute A4, railway lines to Metz, Forbach and Saarbrücken).
