Aluminum nitrate is a chemical compound, the aluminum salt of nitric acid. It forms colorless and deliquescent rhombic crystals. Aluminum nitrate is very soluble in water; the solution is acidic. When crystallizing from aqueous solutions, the nonahydrate Al forms ( NO3) 3.9 H2O. By heating the hydrate water of crystallization is at 73 ° C again. The salt shows no melting point and decomposes above about 150 ° C.

Representation

The preparation of aluminum nitrate can be prepared by dissolving aluminum hydroxide in nitric acid.

Use

The substance was formerly used for mantle - making. In the manufacture of nuclear fuel rods, the nitrate is used as extractant for uranium. Furthermore, aluminum nitrate is used as a mordant in dyeing and tanning leather.

Safety

Aluminum nitrate is highly irritating to the mucous membranes of the eyes and the respiratory tract. When ingested, the captured nitrate ion dizziness, headache and pain in the stomach area, bloody vomiting, diarrhea, relaxation of vascular smooth muscle and reduction may result in heart rate. The nitrate is a strong oxidizer and thus acts oxidizing.
