Aluminon is the ammonium salt of aurintricarboxylic acid and thus belongs to the triphenylmethane dyes. The name of the deep red substance is derived from its use for aluminum detection.
Use
Aluminon is used primarily for the detection of aluminum. It forms in combination with aluminum in acetic acid solution a sparingly soluble red color paint that often fails in red flakes after a few minutes. The precipitate dissolves in contrast to the other metals, not after the addition of ammoniacal ammonium carbonate solution ( ( NH4) 2CO3 ).
