Alvega is a comune ( freguesia ) in Portugal.

Alvega belongs to the district Abrantes in the district of Santarém, has an area of 55.3 km ² and has 1502 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011). It lies at an altitude of 39 m on the left bank of the Tagus river.

History

During Roman times it was known as Aritium Vetus. From here led Roman roads to Lisbon, Mérida and Salamanca.

An inscription in a stone reported that on May 11, 37 AD, the population of the settlement made ​​the so-called Kaisereid to the new princeps Caligula.

Structures

The most striking building in the village is Alvega Solar de Alvega, a mansion that was built in the 17th century by Count Caldeira de Mendanha and now serves as a hotel. In addition, here are the church of São Pedro and the Chapel of Casa Branca.

The Ponte Rodo - Ferroviária de Alvega is a bridge over the Tagus river from 1881 between Alvega and Mouriscas.
