Alverca is a comune ( freguesia ) and city ( Cidade ) in the district of Vila Franca de Xira. The municipality is 19.4 km ² and has 31 063 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011). Since about two decades, Alverca developed due to its favorable location on the railway line Linha do Norte, a suburb of Lisbon and is now part of the affluent suburbs of the capital.

Alverca was raised on 9 August 1990 to the city.

In Alverva There is a popular Aviation Museum, an old church of 1687 and a new church called Igreja dos Pastorinhos from the 21st century. This church is known for its carillon. At the Aviation Museum, one of two branch offices of the Museum of the Força Aérea Portuguesa (FAP ) in Sintra is a former military airfield, one of the oldest in Portugal, which is, however, no longer used as such. However, non-flying units of the FAP took still a part of the site. The State Aviation Company OGMA has here also a work that will be carried out repairs to aircraft on the site of a military airfield Alverca.

The town includes the village of A- dos - Melros.
