Alvor is a comune ( Freguesia ) and small town ( Vila ) in the district of Portimão, in the Algarve region, Portugal. It lies between the towns of Portimão and Lagos on a lagoon and the mouth of the Rio de Alvor. Of the approximately 5000 inhabitants live about 3,000 in the historic village that has retained its original character with narrow streets, whitewashed houses and the harbor. On 30 June 2011, the municipality had 6379 inhabitants ² on an area of 15.2 km.

History

It is suspected that already had the small port " Portus Hanni Bali " is applied to this point, the Phoenicians from Carthage; secured, however, is the Roman establishment " Ipses " which even had its own mint money. Just outside Alvor are the remains of a Roman villa. To 716 the Moors conquered the place, now he was called " Albur " until it was conquered by the Christians in 1250 and got its current name. In January 1975, the Alvor Agreement on the independence of Angola from Portugal was in a local hotel Penina decided after the Carnation Revolution in 1974 and the end of the colonial war. In the hotel the famous Beatle musician Paul McCartney had lived in 1968 and wrote a song for the native of Porto Beat Band Jotta Herre. Local development

The small fishing harbor with fish market was modernized. Besides the traditional acquisition branches fishing, crafts, retail and catering the tourism industry in Alvor has now - attained the greatest importance - at least in the bathing season. The beach is about 1-2 km south-east outside the town.

Traffic

There is a road connection to five kilometers away coastal road N125. For the A22 coastal motorway is 7 kilometers.

Until the 1980s, Alvor was a stop on the railway line Linha do Algarve. The station has since been closed.
