Amabi

Amabi was a kingdom in the west of the island of Timor, which now belongs to Indonesia.

History

The inhabitants of the kingdom of amabi and its ruling family are originally from the present-day district Ermera in neighboring East Timor. After some of the local kingdoms were conquered by the Portuguese, who amabi fled to Kupang, the time the only stronghold of the Dutch East India Company (VOC ) on the island. There they were in 1665 one of the " five loyal allies " of the Dutch.

Here the refugees occupied two territories: amabi and, further east, amabi - OEfeto. The latter was a frontier post against enemy empires. Amabi - OEfeto was indeed larger in area, but less heavily populated as the actual amabi.

Between 1736 and 1738 amabi subdued temporarily allied with the Portuguese Amanubang.

Amabi today

The population of amabi is one of the Atoin Meto, the dominant ethnic group of West Timor. Amabi is part Kupangs today. The ruler line of amabi - OEfeto died out, the current heir to the ruler of amabi has his residence today in amabi - OEfeto. Fettor Gideon amabi ( " Fettor " is a title ) has still great influence on the population. He was elected in the first direct elections in the district parliament in 2004. Fettor amabi Gideon and his Javanese wife are evangelical Christians. Crown prince of the dynasty is her son Muda Israel amabi.
