Amadou Toumani Touré

Amadou Toumani Touré [ Amadu TUMANI tuʀe ], briefly called ATT (* November 4, 1948 in Mopti ) was from May 2002 to March 2012, the President of Mali.

Soldier

After attending school in his home town of Mopti, he went to Bamako, to be trained as a teacher. He then joined the Army and attended from 1969 to 1972 the École inter -poor in Kati. He was trained as a paratrooper and visited 1974/1975 courses in Ryazan (Soviet Union) and 1978 and 1989/1990 in France. Interim President

After riots, which were initially suppressed by force, to Lieutenant Colonel Touré took part in the overthrow of President Moussa Traoré on 26 March 1991. President

In October 2001, he resigned as brigadier general of the army in Mali in May 2002 and ran for the presidential elections. In the second round he was able to prevail against the former Minister Soumaïla Cissé with 64.35 percent of the vote. On 29 April 2007 he was re-elected for another term. Touré is no party.

On March 21, 2012 Touré was toppled a month before the regular end of his term of office by a military coup. The spokesman for the rebels, Amadou KONARE, said on state television that the president was not in a position to lead the government and get the since mid January 2012 ongoing rebellion of the Tuareg in the north of the country under control. The coup leaders sat at the same time the constitution, translated from the scheduled for April 29 presidential election and declared all existing government institutions to resolve.
