Amaethon

Amaethon fab Dôn [ va ː b a'maiθon do ː n], also Amathaon, is a legendary figure from the Welsh four branches of the Mabinogi.

Mythology

Amaethon is a son of the mother goddess Dôn. As the only he is able to plow with his brother, the blacksmith Govannon, a huge field. His brother has him doing the Feldrain the plowshares sharpen. The plowing is one of the tasks that get imposed Arthur, Kulhwch and the other knights in the history Kulhwch and Olwen the Giant Ysbaddaden.

Interpretation

Amaethon is often interpreted as an indication of an old Celtic and British god of agriculture. Its name derives from the Celtic Ambaxtonos ( " Big plowman ").

The three sons of Dôn represent three important items:

  • Gwydyon is the Druid, the " scholars "
  • Govannon is the artisan
  • Amaethon is the farmer
