Amal Movement

The Amal Movement (Arabic حركة أمل harakat amal, French Mouvement des dépossédés or Amal Movement and German Movement of the Deprived ), in the Lebanese vernacular simply Amal ( Hope German ), is a Shiite party in Lebanon. In Arabic, the four initials of battalions of the Lebanese resistance.

The foundation dates back to the initiative of the Shiite cleric Musa al-Sadr, who founded as leader of a series of mass demonstrations AMAL 1975 from the end of 1974.

The AMAL denounced mainly to social ills and tried to distinguish themselves in this way, besides the Communist Party of Lebanon as a representative of social demands. In addition to the propagated idea of ​​equality, saw the AMAL in the defense of southern Lebanon from Israeli attacks another important field of action.

Like almost all Lebanese parties it formed from an armed arm, developed into a civil war militias, the Amal militia.

As Amal party is today the Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri. In the Lebanese Parliament Amal movement is represented continuously since 1990 and currently has 15 of 128 seats ( as of 2006).
